MedTestBank3D Anatomy for Nursing

Uterine (fallopian) tubes

The tubes that carry the egg from the ovary to the uterus, where fertilization happens.

Where it is

From the upper corners of the uterus toward each ovary: isthmus, ampulla and the fringed infundibulum (fimbriae).

What it does

Fimbriae sweep the released egg into the tube; cilia and muscle move it toward the uterus. Fertilization usually happens in the ampulla.

Clinical relevance

  • Tubal scarring from pelvic inflammatory disease raises the risk of ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
  • Tubal ligation is a permanent form of contraception.

Nursing focus

  • Consider ectopic pregnancy in any person of reproductive age with abdominal pain and a missed period.
