MedTestBank3D Anatomy for Nursing

Radial artery

The artery on the thumb side of the wrist, used for pulse checks and arterial blood gases.

Where it is

Runs down the lateral forearm from the brachial artery to the wrist, where it is felt over the distal radius.

What it does

Supplies the forearm and hand together with the ulnar artery; the two connect in the palmar arches.

Clinical relevance

  • The usual site for counting the pulse and for arterial blood gas sampling.
  • Perform the Allen test before radial puncture to confirm ulnar collateral flow.

Nursing focus

  • Apply direct pressure for at least 5 minutes after an arterial puncture (longer with anticoagulants).
