Where it is
Continues from the external iliac artery under the inguinal ligament, in the femoral triangle of the upper thigh, lateral to the femoral vein.
What it does
Supplies blood to the thigh and lower leg through its branches and its continuation, the popliteal artery.
Clinical relevance
- Femoral access is used for cardiac catheterization and angioplasty.
- Bleeding or a hematoma at the site is the main early complication.
Nursing focus
- After femoral catheterization, keep the leg straight, check the site and distal pulses frequently, and apply pressure if bleeding occurs.
- Report sudden back or flank pain (possible retroperitoneal bleeding).
