MedTestBank3D Anatomy for Nursing

Skin

The outer covering of the body and its largest organ.

Where it is

Covers the entire body surface; thickest on the palms and soles, thinnest on the eyelids.

What it does

Protects against infection and fluid loss, regulates temperature, senses the environment and makes vitamin D.

Clinical relevance

  • Older adults have thinner skin with less fat and slower healing, so they tear and bruise easily.
  • Jaundice is best seen in the sclera; cyanosis in the lips and nail beds.
  • Moist skin (incontinence, sweating) breaks down faster.

Nursing focus

  • Use barrier creams for incontinence and lift sheets to avoid shear.
  • Inspect high-risk areas every shift: sacrum, heels, hips, elbows, back of the head and under devices.
